Plugit × Digia

Data-heavy electric-vehicle fleet
management platform transformed
into clear and impactful daily tool

The Starting Point

Plugit Finland Oy asked Digia for help in redesigning Plugit Cloud, updating the user interface and user experience. The Plugit Cloud product family contains three products: a charger management system (CMS) for electric vehicles working as the backend system for charging devices; an e-fleet charging management system (FCMS); as well as customer service tools (Admin).

The last UI update was from 2016, and the design had become outdated. The user experience was less than optimal, being complex to use and difficult to understand. Different products had been developed using different design principles, resulting in inconsistent look and feel.

The Strategy

The core idea was to use an agile approach combined with user-centric design and to prioritise simplicity and functionality when redesigning the Plugit products. A beautiful user interface is nothing if the product is not also easy and intuitive to use.

Vehicle and charging transaction statuses

Focusing on adaptability and iterative development allowed us to craft a solution that evolved dynamically through continuous feedback, ensuring the products meet real-world needs effectively.

A vehicle card allows fleet managers to view detailed information about a specific vehicle, e.g. the owner, connected users, location, charging status and activity list.

The Creative Idea

The redesign process relied heavily on understanding user needs and translating them into functional and visually appealing designs.

By creating a new design system with a design ruleset that is easy for developers to understand and a reusable component library we were able to unify the user interfaces and the user experience of all products in the Plugit Cloud product family, both in mobile and web environments.

The design language is used across 300+ layouts. Its key elements include a consistent colour palette, typography and 8px grid system.

UX collaboration meetings

The product owner and the UX Designer worked in close collaboration throughout the project and the designs were implemented straight to the user interface, without wireframes, to keep things as lean as possible.

The design language also includes a multitude of specially crafted icons, tags and other elements.
All illustrations are custom designed, including the vehicle type designators, maps, and depot views.

The Results

The redesigned Plugit Cloud product family is modern, informative and harmonious, far superior to standard EV management systems. Plugit Cloud has become an efficient tool that allows fleet managers to handle complex operations using real-time data. Being easy to learn and use, the new user interface helps save time and money.

Charging-slot specific view offers a timeline showing when the slot is in use, free, or scheduled for maintenance. Additional information includes charger, location and pricing details.
Charging location offers an at-a-glance view of on-going activities across all slots within a depot. The colour coding of vehicle status plays a significant role here.

Thanks to the new design system product development for Plugit has become easier and faster than ever before. They can continue further development of their products on their own and make the user experience consistent across all the products in the Plugit family.

Clarity of data
Efficient to use
Easier and faster to develop
More success in sales

The redesign is also showing clear business benefits: with the appealing design and great usability, it is now much easier for Plugit to showcase and sell their products to potential customers.

All user groups: the fleet managers, the charging system operators, the developers and business owners at Plugit are all impressed by the improvements made by the new visual and usability upgrade.

Fleet schedule allows fleet managers to inspect the charging status of their fleet on a timeline with 13 different variables.
The fleet overview consists of vehicle-specific cards. The charging status of each vehicle is immediately apparent in the colour coding. The view can be filtered by charging status as well as other variables.
